Scientific Proposal

Adriana Pires was member of the AIP from 2010 to 2018 and she was member of the eROSITA collaboration since many years. She left the AIP last year and is striving for a research position in China (offer just made). She did a detailed forecast of the expected harvest of Isolated Neutron Stars (INS) with eROSITA all-sky surveys (Pires et al. 2017, AN 328, 213) based on population synthesis (with assumed birth rate, initial kick velocity, cooling curve and dynamic evolution in the galactic potential). The detailed outcome of the simulations was an observed distribution of INS in the eROSITA sky given a 3D absorption model, the likely camera setting of the 7 CCDs in the focal plane of eROSITA and a standard exposure map made available by the Hamburg team.

Adriana was co-authoring the accepted PV-proposal on the INS RBS1223, which shall make use of the excellent spectral resolution of eROSITA for INS research to test current spectral models, to improve the timing solution and possibly the proper motion solution. Adriana has made contributions to all three of those branches of neutron star research. This proposal shall secure her involvement in the analysis of the PV data, mainly focusing on the timing and spatial analysis where she has gathered a huge expertise. This proposal also covers eRASS:1 and she will be involved in setting up a search strategy for new INS and will likely be involved in first follow-up studies.

The proposal for EC-renewal submitted April 23, 2020, is attached to this page.

List of Potential Collaborators within eROSITA_DE

The list comprises the other co-authors of the PV-proposal on the INS RBS1223. The team is composed of Frank Haberl, Klaus Werner, Valery Suleimanov, and Axel Schwope.

Update (April 2020): The team was enlarged to include also Chandreyee Maitra and Werner Becker, both MPE

Expected Outcome

The expected outcome is a scientific paper describing the results of the PV-observations on RBS1223 with Adriana being a co-author. The anticipated result of the second topic, search for new INS in eRASS:1, will likely be a catalog of candidate objects to be followed-up by either X-ray (Chandra, XMM-Newton) or optical observations to confirm or reject their nature as INS.

Expected duration of the project

Initially one year.

Update April 2020: Renewal is proposed for one year
