Scientific Proposal

Follow-up project on eROSITA discovered isolated neutron star (INSs) candidates. Optical follow-up observations with 8m-class telescopes are important to confirm the INS nature of the selected candidates. As the current ESO resources are insufficient and there is no other 8m-class telescope with sufficient sensitivity that we can currently access, we want to reach out to other facilities. Via the observing time distributed to Brazil, Laerte Andrade will help us to obtain deep optical observations with the Gemini-Observatories for selected INS candidates. The external collaborator will not touch eROSITA data, but will have access to unpublished coordinates during proposal preparation. The outcome of the observations will be reported in a paper led by Jan Kurpas, which Laerte will be co-authoring.

The proposal for EC submitted Apr 10, 2026, is attached to this page.

List of Potential Collaborators within eROSITA_DE

The list comprises the people involved in this project (Kurpas, Pires, Haberl, Sheth).

Expected Outcome

The expected outcome are deep optical imaging data for selected eROSITA INS candidates. A paper led by Jan Kurpas is expected to be written on the basis of this data, where Laerte will be a co-author.

Expected duration of the project

The IEC status is requested for the preparation of a Gemini proposal in April 2026, the subsequent data analysis, and the time needed to write a paper reporting the outcome of the observations.
