Scientific Proposal

A multi-wavelength characterization is crucial to confirm the nature of transient events. We propose multi-wavelength opt/IR support for accretion bursts on young stellar objects (YSOs) detected in X-rays during eRASS. With its repeated all-sky survey for a total time span of 4-yrs, eRASS is ideally suited to detect variability on the time-scales of months, as typical for these so-called FUOr or EXOr events. However, their identification as accretion bursts requires opt/IR follow-up. The unprecedented sensitivity and spatial coverage, together with the survey duration (10 years) and observing cadence of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will be ideal for the monitoring of accretion bursts such as EXOrs on YSOs. The Rubin LSST WG “Non-Degenerate Eruptive Variables” includes the science topic of YSOs with eruptive accretion, and the proposer of this EC request (R.Bonito) currently acts as Chair of this WG. The Rubin LSST will start its operations in 2022-2023 and eRASS being operative for the next 3 years, allows for some overlap between the two surveys. In any case, the Rubin LSST follow-up will be assured for the next decade. R.Bonito is also collaborator of programs focused on opt/IR studies of YSOs and young clusters where eruptive accretion events can be observed/discovered (exploring also accretion, shocks, ejection processes, their variabilità, and disk properties around YSOs) with currently available or future instruments such as: FLAMES, also in the context of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES), where R.Bonito is the responsible since the first Data Release of GES for the accretion parameters; X-Shooter, being R.Bonito involved in a GTO dedicated to YSOs and in several GO on young stars and clusters; WEAVE, being R.Bonito an official member of the Stellar, Circumstellar and Interstellar Physics (SCIP)/YSO WG, whose operations will start this year (2021).

Expected Outcome

The multi-wavelength follow-up of EXOr variables detected in eRASS that will be provided through our collaboration are essential for the interpretation of the eROSITA data of these objects. Any eventual publication on eRASS detetions of EXOr variables will depend on and include the complementary optical/IR data that I provide.

Expected duration of the project

The project extends over the full 4-yr eROSITA survey phase, i.e. we forecast future extension requests of the EC status. The EC request had been granted in the past, as the EXOr trigger by B.Stelzer has been active since the beginning of eRASS. However, there was no trigger, and therefore no activity was done by the EC, R.Bonito. The lack of triggers was caused by a problem in the NRTA source detection, that has been fixed now according to the NRTA team.
