Notes on discussion

Vadim Burwitz (MPE)/ Jan Robrade (Hamburg) - Stellar Working Group

  • Even shallow surveys are adequate, because these tend to be bright
  • Need coverage over the galactic plane
  • Typically one direction-- look at optical star catalog and find the eROSITA counterpart
  • a challenge is stars tend to have companions, and these cannot be easily separated in the X-ray
  • Nearby- so proper motions must be available for the optical catalogs...
  • Stellar scientists will generate new lists and need to upload those into Frank's tool to allow for cross-correlations with other catalogs.

Arne Rau (MPE) and Axel Schwope (AIP) - compact objects working group

  • Type 1 sources: known X-ray emitters (famous but a minority of sources)
  • Type 2 sources: standard multi-wavelength catalogs... position, flux, morphology and variability information needed
  • Most are galactic sources (also LMC and SMC), but not true for all....
  • Variability - on different timescales-- typically shorter timescales than AGN
  • Lack of a counterpart is also important information
  • Proper motions would be key way to separate CV and AGN-- otherwise only Spectra can do this
    • o Galaxy extent also useful for AGN... (but not QSO's)
  • Showed the Catalina Real Time Survey-- nice variability survey

Werner Becker, Tom - SNe Remnants

Mara - AGN

  • could we test for variability on PS1 and DES?
  • can we work together to combine data from different bands? (i, UKIDS/WISE/DES?)

Discussion items:

  • specific questions:
    • o We need some kind of footprint service-- using Mangle??? o Start with crude coverage maps... ultimately will likely need detailed coverage maps. o Healpix has been thought of, but it's not very efficient... o Polygons seem to be better for this- well accepted. o Database server- bringing the Johns Hopkins here to start with quickly. It would be at the Rechenzentrum. o New person would be hired at MPE to handle this work.
  • A shared region of the sky.... Stripe82 is an option. 2 deg^2 would be a good start. PS1+DES+SDSS....
  • Discussion of links to the images from particular surveys for...
    • o need to store the coadds and offer cutouts.... o need an interactive tool to create cutouts... this serves most people.
  • Discussion of X-ray image cutouts... should it be in image space or
    • should it be the photon lists.
      • o Tom doing this for spectra and light curves... o Would work for lists of sources... is good for stacking...
  • Further discussion of database issues....
    • o looking for an additional person supported by MPE... o will try to get Marion Cadolle Bel involved in this, starting this fall o RZG is sharing DBA half and half with MPA...
  • To do list: by October...
    • o Joe: will track down PS1 and DES photometry over stripe 82... get back to Mara about this. o Hermann- will work on the database issues.
  • Will post talks on the wiki... (for now)
    • o will try to circulate notes, too...
  • Discussion of October meeting --
    • o Schedule for the next consortium meeting....
      • + 2.5 days of meeting...
